The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as an idea can be tracked back into antiquity, at least as far back into recorded history as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Having said that, these, old records were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
In fact, the oldest recipe found, according to experts are a few ancient tablets in Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel exhilarated. Later on, we find a couple of recipe books dating from the fourteenth century - a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these are unconnected to the curry that we all know today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals prepared by the cooks of the rich and powerful of that period. For the next few years, the powerful and rich houses competed to serve the most exotic banquets, and as a result the best chefs and their recipes became highly prized. Even so, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that cooking and cookery books became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collecting, verifying, and publishing recipes common in their social group. By the advent of the twentieth century, cook books are highly popular due to increased literacy, people having increased leisure time and disposable income. The introduction of the TV gave us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes such as those found on our web site. |
