The History of Recipes
Academics have tracked the existance of recipes way back into history, certainly as far back into recorded history as early Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that is, sadly, these old cook books were just very basic pictorial instructions for preparing food.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history is a series of clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel wonderful. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years there were a couple of recipe books which appeared in the fourteenth century ; a book called `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, they are nothing to do with the indian curry that appears on menues today, but instead accounts of the types of food cooked for the rich and powerful. During the succeeding few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of Europe competed to serve the most extravagent meals, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their recipe collections increased in prestige. However, it was during the 1800s that cookery and recipe publications reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collecting, trying out, and writing down recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us TV cooks and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on sites such as this. |
We hope you enjoy this Chocolate Amareto Cheesecake recipe.
