The History of Recipes

It is quite possible to follow the history of recipes back into the far past, in fact as far back into history as ancient Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that is, mostly, these early cook books were just very basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.

In fact, the most ancient recipe found, according to food historians is a collection of stone tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`.

Progressing into The time of the roman empire 25BC a man called Apicius created a number of documents showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, he describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and dessert, something we still use today. Aspicius describes how the Roman cooks made use of many herbs, including some that we all recognise such as bay, mint and asafoetida.

For the centuries that followed, the rich families of Wesstern Europe strove to serve the most exotic meals, and as a result the best chefs and their recipe collections could command a high salary. However, it wasn`t until the 19th century that fine cookery and recipe books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, verifying, and writing down recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy.

By the time we get to the 20th century, cooking publications are greatly in demand mostly as a result of increased literacy, people having increased leisure time and having more money to spend.

The introduction of the TV brings us TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them.

And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this web site.
