The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as a concept can be found far back into history, in fact as far into history as the Egyptians, and maybe further still. Interesting though that is, mostly, these ancient records were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history is a series of tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times we find some books from the 14th Century ; a book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, they have no connection with the spicy food that we all know today, but rather accounts of the types of food on the menus of the upper classes of that period. Over the following few centuries, the powerful and wealthy strove to serve up the best banquets, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their recipe collections could command a high salary. However, it was during the 19th century that cooking and recipe books became really popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, verifying, and publishing recipes to help cooks of their time. When we get to the 1900s, cook books were greatly in demand due to more people being able to read, people having more leisure time and a general increase in wealth. |
