HELLO FELLOW PASSOVER CHEFS!!! Every year my mother-in-law has a large
first seder (35 people) and every year we have the same food!!! I have
offered to bring a new carrot dish, does any one have a simple tasty
dish to serve with the main course? Below is a wonderful chocolate
layer cake recipe that is easy and fun for kids to help make: DIP ONE
SHEET OF MATZAH IN THE WINE AND PLACE ON A PLATTER, SPREAD WITH
FROSTING, CONTINUE DIPPING AND LAYERING UNTIL YOU ARE SATISFIED WITH
THE HEIGHT OF YOUR CAKE AND FROST THE OUTSIDE AND DECORATE WITH FRUIT
OR NUTS OR CHOCOLATE. REFRIGERATE OVER NIGHT SO THE MATZAH HAS TIME
TO SOFTEN. REGARDING THE FROSTING, YOU CAN MAKE YOUR OWN >> KOSHER
FOR PASSOVER VERSION OR YOU CAN USE THE STORE BOUGHT KIND IF YOU ARE
NOT TOO OBSERVANT. I PERSONALLY AGREE WITH SANDI BROOKS, I FOLLOW
PASSOVER TRADITION BUT NOT THE STRICT LAW. LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR

The History of Recipes
Recipes as an idea can be observed far back into the distant past, in fact as far back into recorded history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe even further. Having said that, mostly, these ancient recipes were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe found, according to Professor Solomon Katz, is a collection of stone tablets in Sumerian which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, there were a couple of books published in the 1300s - a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these books are not about the curry that appears on menues today, but instead recipes for the types of meals served to the rich and powerful of the time. Over the next few hundred years, the upper classes strove to serve the most extravagent banquests, and as a result chefs and their recipes were highly sought after. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that formal cookery and recipe publications reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to collating, verifying, and writing down recipes of the day. The arrival of TV gave us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to search through thousands of recipes like those on our web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Chocoltate Layer Cake recipe.
