The History of Recipes
It is possible to track the history of meal recipes way back into antiquity, in fact as far into history as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further. In practice though, generally, these old cook books were just very basic hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.
In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are a few tablets in Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel wonderful and blissful. Later, we have two interesting recipe books which were published in the 1300s : one book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these two books have no connection with the indian curry that we all know today, but instead accounts of the types of meals served to the upper classes of the time. For the decades that followed, the rich families of Europe tried to serve up the most extravagent meals, and consequentially chefs and their collection of recipes were greatly in demand. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 19th century that fine cooking and recipe books rose to prominence. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to assembling, trying out, and writing down recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. The arrival of television brought us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like those on sites such as this. |
