The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to track the history of written cooking instructions back into history, in truth as far back as early Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these old cook books were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to academics is a series of ancient tablets in Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel exhilarated and blissful. Moving on, there are two books which appeared in the 14th Century : a cookery book called `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these are nothing to do with the curry that is served today, but rather recipes for the types of food prepared by the cooks of the rich and wealthy people of that period. During the next few hundred years, the wealthy families of Wesstern Europe tried to offer the most extravagent meals, and as a consequence, cooks and their collection of recipes were much in demand. Even so, it wasn`t until the 1800s that fine cookery and recipe publications became really popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collecting, verifying, and writing down recipes to help cooks of their time. By the time we get to the twentieth century, recipe publications are starting to become popular mostly as a result of more people being able to read, people having more free time and having more disposable income. |
