The History of Recipes
We can track the history of written recipes back into history, in truth as far back into history as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that is, in the main part, these old cookbooks were just very basic pictorial recipes for preparing food.
In fact, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to experts is a series of tablets in Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel wonderful. Progressing into Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a few scripts which described recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his works, he describes how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. He also informs us how the cooks of Roman times made use of a good variety of aromatic flavours, including many that are still in use today for example bay, mint and parsley. Later on, there are two interesting recipe books dating from the 14th Century ; a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these have no connection with the indian curry that is served today, but rather descriptions of the types of food prepared by the chefs of the rich and wealthy people of that period. Later on in the 1400s, the Crusaders brought back many new spices and herbs from Arab cooking, such as parsley and basil. These new foods and tastes prompted an explosion in recipe books, the majority of which still exist in academic collections. The introduction of the TV brought us celebrity chefs and the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
We hope you enjoy this Christmas Cocktail recipe.
