The History of Recipes
It is possible to trace the history of meal recipes far back into the distant past, at least as far into history as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe even further. However, mostly, these old recipes were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to historians are a few ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel exhilarated. Later, there are a couple of interesting books which appeared in the 14th Century : one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, they are not about the indian curry that appears on menues today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals enjoyed by the rich and powerful of that period. Later, in the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back many foods and herbs from middle-east cuisine, including coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new herbs and spices was responsible for an increase in recipe books, some of which are now in academic collections. During the following few hundred years, the powerful families of Wesstern Europe competed with each other to serve up the most extravagent meals, and because of this the best cooks and their collection of recipes were much in demand. Even so, it was during the nineteenth century that cookery and recipe publications rose to prominence. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collating, trying out, and writing down recipes of the day. The arrival of television brought us cooking programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to search through thousands of recipes like those on our site. |
We hope you enjoy this Christmas Cocktail recipe.
