The History of Recipes
Food historians have traced the existance of recipes way back into history, in truth as far back as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further than that. In practice though, sadly, these old cookbooks were just primitive pictorial instructions for meal preparation.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to historians are a few tablets in Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel `wonderful`. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years there were two books published in the 14th Century - one book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, they are unconnected to the curry that we all know today, but instead accounts of the types of meals eaten by the rich and wealthy people of those days. During the succeeding few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of Europe tried to offer the most extravagent banquests, and because of this cooks and their recipes were greatly in demand. Notwithstanding that, it was during the nineteenth century that formal cookery and recipe books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to collating, testing, and recording recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this web site. |
