The History of Recipes
Historians have proved the existence of recipes back into distant history, at least as far as pharonic Egypt, and maybe further still. However, mostly, these old cook books were just simple hieroglyphic instructions for food preparation.
Progressing into The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a number of scripts describing recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, Apicius describes how the roman meals were split into hors d`oeuvre, main course and afters, a very modern way of dining. Additionally, he tells us how the Romans were skilled in the use of many different spices and herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs like thyme, mint and asafoetida. In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many foods and spices from the Middle-East, including basil and rosemary. These new herbs and spices prompted a torrent in manuscripts on cookery, the majority of which are kept safe in private libraries. The introduction of television brought us cooking programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like those on this recipe site. |
