The History of Recipes
We are able to follow the history of `recipes` way back into the distant past, in fact as far back into recorded history as the Egyptians, and maybe further still. Interesting though that is, sadly, these ancient cook books were just very simple pictorial recipes for food preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to academics is a series of clay tablets in the Sumerian language which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. As we move on, there are a couple of books from the 14th Century - a cookery book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, they are unconnected to the spicy food that is popular today, but rather accounts of the types of food cooked for the rich people of those days. During the following few hundred years, the powerful families of the West strove to serve the best banquets, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their recipes were at a premium. However, it was during the nineteenth century the formal cooking and recipe collections really came of age. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, verifying, and publishing popular recipes of the day. By the advent of the 20th century, recipe books are starting to become popular due to more people being able to read, people having more leisure time and having more disposable income. |
