The History of Recipes
We can track the history of meal recipes way back into the far past, at least as far back as pharonic Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that is, sadly, these old recipes were just very simple hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.
Progressing into The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a collection of scripts detailing recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. He recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main course and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius also describes how the ancient Romans were skilled in the use of many different aromatic flavors, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens such as basil, mint and parsley. For the centuries that followed, the upper-class families of Wesstern Europe competed to serve up the most extravagent meals, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their recipe collections became highly prized. However, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that formal cookery and recipe collections became really popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to collating, trying out, and recording the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. The introduction of the TV brings us TV cooks and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like those on sites such as this. |
