The History of Recipes
Experts have proved the existance of recipes way back into antiquity, at least as far back as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that is, these, early records were just basic hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.
As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years there were two recipe books which date from the 14th Century - a cookery book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these books are not about the curry that is familiar to us all today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals prepared for the nobility of that period. In the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of spices and herbs from the Middle-East, such as coriander, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas caused a torrent in manuscripts on cooking, many of which still exist in private collections. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us TV cooks and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on this web site. |
