The History of Recipes

We are able to read the history of meal recipes back into distant history, in truth as far as the Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, in the main part, these old cook books were just very simple hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.

The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to historians are some stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`.

As we move on, there are two interesting cookery books from the fourteenth century ; one book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, they have no connection with the indian food that appears on menues today, but instead recipes for the types of food on the menus of the upper classes of that time.

Later, in the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many new foods, spices and herbs from Arab cooking, including spices like rosemary and coriander. The introduction of these new foods and spices was responsible for an explosion in recipe publications, some of which are kept safe in private libraries.

During the next few centuries, the wealthy families of Europe tried to lay on the best banquets, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their recipe collections were much in demand. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 19th century that haute cuisine and recipe publications became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collating, testing, and recording popular recipes of the day.

By the advent of the 20th century, recipe publications are increasing in popularity due to more people being able to read, people having increased leisure time and having more money.

The revolution that is television brought us celebrity chefs and the spin-off recipe books.

Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes like those on this web site.
