The History of Recipes
Academics have traced the existance of recipes far back into ancient history, certainly as far back into history as the Egyptians, and maybe further still. Having said that, sadly, these early recipes were just basic hieroglyphic instructions for food preparation.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe discovered, according to historians is a series of ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel exhilarated. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years there were a couple of recipe books from the 14th Century ; one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these two books are unconnected to the spicy food that is popular today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals enjoyed by the rich and wealthy people of that period. During the succeeding few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of the West competed to serve the best banquets, and consequentially the best cooks and their recipe collections were greatly in demand. Nevertheless, it was during the nineteenth century the formal cooking and recipe collections became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to collecting, verifying, and recording the recipes of their peers. By the arrival of the 20th century, cookery books are highly popular due to better eduction, people having more spare time and having more money. Like it or not, the introduction of television gave us TV cooks and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on this web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Cinnamon Sunrise recipe.
