The History of Recipes
We are able to trace the history of written recipes far back into distant history, in fact as far into history as the ancient Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Having said that, generally, these old records were just primitive hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe found, according to historians are some tablets in Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel exhilarated. As we move on, we find some interesting books which date from the fourteenth century : one book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these are unconnected to the indian curry that is popular today, but rather accounts of the types of food prepared by the chefs of the rich. During the next few centuries, the powerful and wealthy strove to offer the most exotic banquets, and as a result the best cooks and their collection of recipes were greatly in demand. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 19th century that cookery and recipe collections rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to assembling, verifying, and writing down the recipes of their peers. The revolution that is television gave us TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes just like those on the site you are now reading. |
We hope you enjoy this Cinnamon Toast recipe.
