The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to follow the history of recipes way back into the far past, in fact as far back into history as the Egyptians, and possibly even further. However, in the main part, these ancient cook books were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history are some stone tablets in Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel `blissful`. Progressing into The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius created some scripts showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by the Romans. He describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into appetizers, main course and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius informs us how the cooks of his times were skilled in the use of many different spices, including many that are still in use today like thyme, rue and parsley. Later, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods, spices and herbs from Arab cooking, including spices such as basil and rosemary. These new herbs and spices led to a torrent in manuscripts on food, many of which are now in private libraries. By the advent of the 1900s, cooking books are greatly in demand due to more people being able to read, more spare time and a general increase in wealth. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brings us TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like those on this recipe site. |
