The History of Recipes
Historians have proved the existence of recipes back into ancient history, in fact as far as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further. However, in the main part, these old cook books were just very simple hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts are some ancient tablets in Sumerian which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel wonderful. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years there were a couple of interesting cookery books which appeared in the fourteenth century ; a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, they have no connection with the indian curry that is popular today, but rather descriptions of the types of food on the tables of the nobility of that period. In the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us many new foods and herbs from the holy lands, including spices like rosemary and coriander. These new culinary innovations led to an outbreak in recipe books, many of which are now in academic collections. Over the following few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of the West tried to serve the most exotic meals, and consequentially the best chefs and their recipe collections became highly prized. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 1800s that cookery and recipe collections rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, verifying, and recording popular recipes of the day. Like it or not, the introduction of television gave us celebrity chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
