The History of Recipes

We are able to trace the history of `recipes` back into distant history, in truth as far back as ancient Egypt, and maybe even further. Having said that, generally, these old cookbooks were just primitive hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.

The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to food historians is a series of stone tablets in the Sumerian language which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel wonderful.

As we move on, there are two books which appeared in the 1300s ; a cookery book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, they are nothing to do with the indian curry that is familiar to us all today, but instead descriptions of the types of food prepared by the cooks of the rich people of the period.

During the next few centuries, the wealthy families of Wesstern Europe tried to offer the most exotic meals, and consequentially chefs and their recipe collections were at a premium. Nevertheless, it was during the 1800s that fine cooking and recipe books reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to collating, testing, and publishing recipes of the day.

The revolution that is television brought us celebrity TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them.

And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like those on this recipe site.
