The History of Recipes
Historians have traced the existence of recipes far back into history, in fact as far into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe even further. Interesting though that is, generally, these ancient records were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
Progressing into The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a number of scripts showing how to cook the recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, he recounts how the roman meals were split into hors d`oeuvres, main course and afters, something we still use today. Additionally, he describes how the cooks of Roman times were skilled in the use of many different spices and herbs, including some familiar names for example thyme, rue and parsley. In the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods and spices from Arab cuisine, including spices such as basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas created an increase in manuscripts on cookery, many of which still exist in private cookery archives. The introduction of television gave us TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like those on this site. |
