The History of Recipes
Academics have tracked the existence of recipes back into the distant past, at least as far into history as the Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, mostly, these early cook books were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
Progressing into The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius assembled some documents detailing recipes cooked by the Romans. In his publication, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into appetizers, main meal and dessert, a very modern way of dining. Additionally, he recounts how the ancient cooks were skilled in the use of many herbs, including some familiar names like thyme, fennel and asafoetida. In the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back many foods, spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, including spices like parsley and basil. The introduction of these new foods and spices led to an explosion in recipe publications, the majority of which are now in academic collections. The introduction of television brought us TV cookery programs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading. |
