The History of Recipes
We can follow the history of written recipes far back into distant history, at least as far into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that is, sadly, these ancient cookbooks were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts are some tablets in Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel wonderful. Progressing into Roman times 25BC a man called Apicius created a number of documents describing recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius informs us how the Romans made use of many spices, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks like bay, fennel and dill. Over the succeeding few centuries, the rich families of Wesstern Europe competed with each other to serve up the most exotic meals, and because of this the best chefs and their recipes became highly prized. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 19th century that formal cookery and recipe collections became popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to collating, testing, and publishing recipes to help cooks of their time. The TV revolution brings us cooking programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this web site. |
