The History of Recipes

Academics have traced the existance of recipes far back into antiquity, at least as far back as the Egyptians, and maybe even further. In practice though, generally, these old recipes were just basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.

Interestingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history are some ancient tablets in Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel blissful and exhilarated.

During Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote some documents detailing recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. He recounts how the roman meals were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and desserts, something that is very familiar to us today. This early Roman chef informs us how the Roman chefs made use of many different aromatic flavours, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs such as thyme, rue and parsley.

In the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods, spices and herbs from middle-east cuisine, including spices such as basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new herbs and spices created a torrent in recipe publications, some of which are kept safe in private cookery archives.

Like it or not, the introduction of television gave us celebrity chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them.

Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading.
