The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to trace the history of written cooking instructions back into ancient history, certainly as far back as the Egyptians, and maybe further still. Having said that, generally, these ancient records were just primitive hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.
In fact, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history are some ancient tablets in Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel wonderful. Later on, in The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a collection of scripts which described recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. He tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into starters, main meal and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. Additionally, he recounts how the ancient chefs made use of many herbs and spices, including some that we all recognise such as basil, mint and asafoetida. Later on in the 1400s, the Crusaders brought back many new foods, spices and herbs from Arab cooking, including spices like rosemary and coriander. These new culinary innovations was responsible for an eruption in recipe books, many of which still exist in private collections. The arrival of television brought us celebrity chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our web site. |
