The History of Recipes

It is actually possible to trace the history of recipes far back into history, in truth as far back into history as the early Egyptians, and maybe even further. Having said that, mostly, these early cook books were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.

As we move into Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a few documents which described recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his publication, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into starters, main course and dessert, something we still use today. Additionally, he informs us how the cooks of his times made use of a wide range of spices and herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks for example thyme, mint and dill.

Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back many new foods, spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, including spices such as coriander, parsley, and rosemary. The introduction of these new foods and spices was responsible for an increase in recipe manuscripts, most of which still exist in private cookery archives.

The revolution that is television gave us celebrity chefs and the spin-off recipe books.

Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on this site.
