The History of Recipes
We can follow the history of meal recipes way back into antiquity, in fact as far into history as early Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these ancient cookbooks were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
In fact, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to experts is a series of stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel wonderful and blissful. Later, there were some books which appeared in the fourteenth century - a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these books are unconnected to the indian curry that appears on menues today, but instead recipes for the types of food on the menus of the rich and wealthy people of that period. For the centuries that followed, the rich and powerful families of Europe strove to serve up the most extravagent meals, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their recipes became highly prized. Even so, it wasn`t until the 19th century that cookery and recipe publications rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to collecting, trying out, and writing down recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. By the time we get to the 20th century, cookery publications are greatly in demand mostly as a result of more people being able to read, people having increased free time and disposable income. The arrival of television brings us TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
