The History of Recipes
We can trace the history of meal recipes back into history, in truth as far back into history as early Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, these, ancient cook books were just very basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
In fact, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to Professor Solomon Katz, is a series of clay tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel exhilarated and blissful. Later on, there are a couple of interesting cookery books which appeared in the fourteenth century ; one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, they have no connection with the curry that is popular today, but rather accounts of the types of food served to the rich and powerful of that time. For the next few years, the wealthy families of the West tried to serve the most extravagent meals, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their recipe collections were highly sought after. Even so, it was during the 19th century that formal cookery and recipe collections rose to prominence. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, spent years to assembling, trying out, and publishing recipes common in their social group. By the advent of the twentieth century, cooking books were increasing in popularity mostly as a result of more people being able to read, people having increased spare time and being a little richer. |
