The History of Recipes
We are able to follow the history of meal recipes way back into ancient history, at least as far back into recorded history as the Egyptians, and maybe further still. In practice though, in the main part, these early cook books were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
Later on, in The time of the roman empire around 25BC a man called Apicius created a collection of scripts describing recipes prepared by the Romans. He describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into appetizers, main meal and afters, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius describes how the ancient Romans made use of a wide range of aromatic flavors, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens for example basil, rue and asafoetida. During the following few hundred years, the rich families of Europe competed with each other to offer the best banquets, and as a result the best cooks and their recipe collections were greatly in demand. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 19th century the formal cooking and cookery books really came of age. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, trying out, and recording the recipes of their peers. The arrival of television brought us TV cookery programs and the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to search through thousands of recipes just like those on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
We hope you enjoy this Coconut Milk recipe.
