The History of Recipes
Written recipes as a concept can be observed way back into the far past, in fact as far back into history as the Egyptians, and maybe further still. Having said that, generally, these ancient cook books were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times we have a couple of recipe books which were published in the 14th Century ; a book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, they are nothing to do with the spicy food that is served today, but rather descriptions of the types of food on the tables of the rich and powerful of that period. By the arrival of the twentieth century, recipe books were highly popular mostly as a result of better eduction, people having more spare time and a general increase in wealth. |
