The History of Recipes
Written recipes as an idea can be observed back into the distant past, in truth as far as the Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. However, generally, these old records were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts is a series of stone tablets in Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel wonderful and blissful. Closer to modern times, we have two interesting books dating from the 1300s ; a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these two books have no connection with the curry that we all know today, but instead accounts of the types of meals prepared by the cooks of the rich and powerful of that period. During the succeeding few centuries, the upper-class families of Europe competed with each other to serve the most exotic banquets, and because of this chefs and their recipe collections became highly prized. Even so, it was during the 19th century that cooking and recipe books reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, spent years to assembling, trying out, and recording recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brings us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on sites such as this. |
