The History of Recipes
We can follow the history of meal recipes way back into history, in truth as far back into recorded history as the Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Having said that, generally, these early cookbooks were just simple pictorial recipes for preparing food.
In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel exhilarated. Later, there were two interesting cookery books from the 14th Century - a book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these are not about the spicy food that is familiar to us all today, but instead recipes for the types of meals prepared by the cooks of the rich and powerful of that period. Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought back many new foods, spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, such as coriander, parsley, and basil. The introduction of these new foods and spices prompted an increase in books on cooking, many of which are kept safe in private collections. For the centuries that followed, the rich and powerful families of Europe tried to lay on the best banquets, and because of this cooks and their recipes increased in prestige. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century the formal cooking and recipe collections reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to assembling, verifying, and writing down recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. The introduction of the TV brings us celebrity chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes just like those on our web site. |
