The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to follow the history of recipes way back into antiquity, at least as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, mostly, these ancient cook books were just very basic hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe found, according to experts in ancient history are some ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel `blissful`. Moving on, there were a couple of interesting books which date from the 1300s - a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these are not about the indian food that we all know today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals enjoyed by the upper classes of the period. During the next few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of Europe competed with each other to serve up the most exotic meals, and as a result chefs and their recipes increased in prestige. However, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that fine cookery and recipe books became popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to collecting, trying out, and writing down recipes to help cooks of their time. By the time we get to the twentieth century, cookery publications are in high demand, mostly due to increased literacy, more spare time and a general increase in wealth. |
