The History of Recipes
Experts have proved the existance of recipes back into ancient history, certainly as far back into recorded history as the Egyptians, and maybe even further. In practice though, mostly, these old cookbooks were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe found, according to food historians are a few ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel wonderful. During the time of the Roman Empire a man called Apicius created some documents detailing recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into starters, entrees and afters, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius also informs us how the Roman cooks made use of many herbs, including some familiar names like thyme, mint and dill. In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods, spices and herbs from the East, including spices such as rosemary and coriander. The introduction of these new tastes was responsible for an outbreak in manuscripts on cookery, the majority of which still exist in private collections. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us TV cooks and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading. |
