The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as an idea can be tracked back into antiquity, in truth as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and maybe even further. In practice though, mostly, these old records were just very basic pictorial instructions for food preparation.
Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, there are two books which were published in the 14th Century : one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these are nothing to do with the indian food that appears on menues today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals served to the rich and powerful of that period. When we get to the 1900s, recipe publications are starting to become popular as a result of increased literacy, more leisure time and being a little richer. |
