The History of Recipes
It is possible to follow the history of `recipes` far back into history, certainly as far back into history as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. In practice though, these, old recipes were just primitive hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
Moving on, there are two recipe books dating from the 14th Century - one book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these are unconnected to the curry that is popular today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals enjoyed by the nobility of the period. Later, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many foods, spices and herbs from the holy land, such as coriander, parsley, and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas prompted an eruption in publications on food, many of which still exist in academic collections. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brought us TV cookery programs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
