The History of Recipes
Experts have proved the existance of recipes way back into distant history, certainly as far as the ancient Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, in the main part, these early recipes were just very basic pictorial recipes for preparing food.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to academics is a series of clay tablets in Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel blissful. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times we find a couple of interesting cookery books which appeared in the 14th Century - a cookery book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these books are nothing to do with the spicy food that we all know today, but rather descriptions of the types of food cooked for the rich and wealthy people of that time. Over the next few centuries, the powerful and wealthy tried to serve up the most extravagent meals, and consequentially cooks and their recipes were at a premium. However, it wasn`t until the 1800s the formal cooking and cookery books rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collecting, verifying, and recording recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. The introduction of television gave us celebrity chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on the site you are now reading. |
We hope you enjoy this Cold Gazpacho recipe.
