The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to follow the history of written cooking instructions back into the far past, in fact as far back as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further. Having said that, generally, these old cookbooks were just primitive pictorial recipes for meal preparation.
During the time of the Romans a roman called Apicius created a few documents showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into starters, main meal and dessert, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius describes how the Romans were skilled in the use of many aromatic flavors, including a few you will know such as basil, mint and parsley. Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods and herbs from the holy lands, including spices such as parsley and basil. The introduction of these new foods and spices was responsible for an eruption in publications on food, most of which still exist in private cookery archives. The arrival of TV gave us TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as this. |
