The History of Recipes
We are able to trace the history of `recipes` back into history, at least as far back as the Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. However, sadly, these ancient records were just very simple hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are a few stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. As we move on, there are two recipe books from the fourteenth century ; a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, they are not about the indian food that appears on menues today, but instead descriptions of the types of food enjoyed by the nobility of that period. During the next few centuries, the wealthy families of Wesstern Europe competed to serve up the best banquets, and consequentially the best chefs and their recipe collections were highly sought after. Nevertheless, it was during the nineteenth century that haute cuisine and recipe publications reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, spent years to collecting, verifying, and recording the recipes of their peers. By the advent of the 20th century, recipe publications are highly popular due to better eduction, people having increased leisure time and being a little richer. The revolution that is television brought us TV cooks and the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes such as those found on our web site. |
