The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to trace the history of written cooking instructions way back into the distant past, at least as far back into recorded history as pharonic Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that is, in the main part, these old recipes were just very simple hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to food historians are some tablets in Sumerian which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel wonderful. Moving on, there are a couple of interesting books which were published in the fourteenth century - a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these books are nothing to do with the spicy food that appears on menues today, but rather descriptions of the types of food on the tables of the upper classes of those days. During the following few centuries, the powerful families of the West competed with each other to offer the most extravagent meals, and because of this the best chefs and their recipes could command a high salary. However, it wasn`t until the 1800s that fine cooking and recipe publications became really popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to assembling, trying out, and writing down recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. By the advent of the 1900s, recipe books are in great demand, mostly as a result of higher levels of literacy, people having increased leisure time and having more money to spend. The revolution that is television brought us TV cookery programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
