The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to trace the history of recipes back into history, at least as far back as the Egyptians, and maybe further still. In practice though, these, ancient records were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
Closer to modern times, there are two recipe books from the 14th Century : a cookery book called `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these are not about the curry that is familiar to us all today, but rather recipes for the types of meals prepared by the chefs of the upper classes of the period. By the arrival of the 1900s, recipe publications are in great demand, due to higher levels of literacy, people having more leisure time and having more money to spend. |
