The History of Recipes
Historians have found proof that recipes existed way back into ancient history, at least as far into history as the Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, generally, these early recipes were just very basic hieroglyphic recipes for meal preparation.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe in existence, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are a few tablets in the Sumerian language which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Closer to modern times, we have some recipe books from the fourteenth century : a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these two books are not about the spicy food that is served today, but rather descriptions of the types of food served to the nobility of those days. During the succeeding few hundred years, the rich families of Europe competed to offer the best banquets, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their collection of recipes were highly sought after. Notwithstanding that, it was during the nineteenth century the formal cooking and cookery books really came of age. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to assembling, verifying, and writing down recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us TV cookery programs and the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes like those on our web site. |
