The History of Recipes
Historians have proved the existence of recipes way back into distant history, certainly as far back into history as the early Egyptians, and maybe even further. However, sadly, these early cook books were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
Progressing into The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a few documents detailing recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his works, he describes how the meals were split into hors d`oeuvres, main course and dessert, a very modern way of dining. He also describes how the Roman cooks made use of many different spices, including some that we all recognise like basil, mint and asafoetida. In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back a variety of spices and herbs from middle-east cuisine, including spices such as parsley, basil and rosemary. These new herbs and spices caused a torrent in manuscripts on food, the majority of which still exist in private libraries. By the arrival of the twentieth century, cookery publications were highly popular mostly due to higher levels of literacy, increased leisure time and a general increase in wealth. |
