The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to trace the history of recipes way back into the far past, at least as far back as ancient Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these early recipes were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to food historians are some clay tablets in Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel wonderful and blissful. As we move into Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a collection of scripts detailing recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, he describes how the roman meals were split into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius informs us how the early Romans used a wide range of spices and herbs, including a few you will know for example thyme, mint and dill. During the next few centuries, the upper-class families of Wesstern Europe competed to serve up the most exotic meals, and because of this the best chefs and their recipe collections could command a high salary. Even so, it wasn`t until the 19th century that haute cuisine and recipe publications became really popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to assembling, testing, and writing down recipes common in their social group. The revolution that is television brings us TV cooks and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes just like those on this site. |
