The History of Recipes
Recipes as an idea can be found way back into the far past, certainly as far back into history as the ancient Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these ancient cookbooks were just primitive hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe found, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are some tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel blissful and exhilarated. Continuing our culinary historical journey, we have two interesting cookery books which appeared in the fourteenth century : one book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, they are not about the curry that appears on menues today, but instead descriptions of the types of food on the tables of the rich and powerful of the period. Over the succeeding few centuries, the wealthy families of Europe tried to lay on the most extravagent meals, and as a result the best cooks and their collection of recipes were greatly in demand. However, it was during the nineteenth century that fine cookery and recipe publications became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collecting, trying out, and writing down recipes of the day. When we get to the 20th century, recipe books were increasing in popularity mostly as a result of increased literacy, more leisure time and being a little richer. The TV revolution brought us celebrity chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes such as those found on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
