The History of Recipes
It is possible to track the history of `recipes` back into ancient history, in fact as far into history as early Egypt, and possibly even further than that. However, in the main part, these ancient records were just basic hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe found, according to academics is a series of tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel `blissful`. Progressing into The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius created a number of documents detailing recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. He tells us how the roman meals were divided into starters, entrees and desserts, a very modern way of dining. He also recounts how the chefs of Roman times used many aromatic flavors, including a few you will know such as basil, fennel and dill. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times we have some recipe books published in the 1300s ; a cookery book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, they are nothing to do with the indian curry that we all know today, but rather recipes for the types of meals prepared for the rich people of that period. In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many foods and spices from the Middle-East, including spices such as parsley and basil. The introduction of these new foods and spices was responsible for a surge in books on cookery, most of which still exist in private libraries. The introduction of television brings us TV cookery programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as this. |
