The History of Recipes
Food historians have proved the existance of recipes back into distant history, at least as far back into history as ancient Egypt, and maybe even further. However, mostly, these old recipes were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history are some clay tablets in Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel `wonderful`. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years there are some recipe books which appeared in the 1300s ; a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these books are not about the indian food that appears on menues today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals on the menues of the upper classes of that time. Over the following few hundred years, the wealthy families of Europe competed with each other to offer the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, chefs and their recipe collections increased in prestige. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that fine cookery and recipe publications became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to assembling, testing, and writing down recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. By the arrival of the 20th century, recipe publications are in great demand, mostly as a result of more people being able to read, increased leisure time and a general increase in wealth. Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us TV cookery programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on this recipe site. |
