The History of Recipes
Academics have traced the existence of recipes way back into antiquity, in fact as far as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and potentially, even further back. In practice though, these, ancient cook books were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of clay tablets in the Sumerian language which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel `blissful`. Progressing into The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a few scripts showing how to cook the recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his publication, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius describes how the cooks of Roman times were skilled in the use of many different herbs and spices, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens such as bay, rue and parsley. Over the next few centuries, the rich and powerful families of Wesstern Europe strove to lay on the most extravagent banquests, and because of this the best chefs and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. However, it wasn`t until the 1800s that fine cookery and recipe publications rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to assembling, verifying, and recording popular recipes of the day. By the arrival of the twentieth century, cookery books were starting to become popular as a result of higher levels of literacy, people having increased leisure time and a general increase in wealth. The introduction of television brings us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like those on our site. |
