The History of Recipes
We can track the history of `recipes` back into antiquity, in fact as far back as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, these, early recipes were just basic pictorial instructions for preparing food.
Later on, in The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius created some documents which described recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his publication, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and desserts, something that is very familiar to us today. This early Roman chef informs us how the Roman cooks used a good variety of herbs and spices, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs like basil, mint and asafoetida. Over the succeeding few centuries, the rich families of the West tried to serve the most exotic banquets, and because of this the best cooks and their recipes became highly prized. However, it wasn`t until the 1800s that cookery and recipe publications became really popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collecting, verifying, and publishing recipes to help cooks of their time. The TV revolution brings us celebrity chefs and the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes such as those found on our web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Cornbread & Bacon Stuffing recipe.
