The History of Recipes

Recipes as an idea can be tracked far back into distant history, at least as far as ancient Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Having said that, generally, these early records were just very simple hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.

Progressing into Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a collection of documents describing recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, Apicius recounts how the roman meals were divided into starters, entrees and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius also informs us how the cooks of Roman times made use of many different aromatic flavours, including some familiar names like bay, rue and dill.

Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back many foods and herbs from the Middle-East, including basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new foods and spices was responsible for a surge in books on cooking, many of which are kept safe in private cookery archives.

The TV revolution gave us cooking programs and the recipe books that accompanied them.

Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on our site.
