The History of Recipes
Experts have found proof that recipes existed far back into distant history, at least as far back into history as the ancient Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. However, in the main part, these ancient cookbooks were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to food historians are a few stone tablets in the Sumerian language which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel exhilarated and blissful. Closer to modern times, we find some recipe books dating from the fourteenth century - a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, they are unconnected to the indian curry that is popular today, but instead accounts of the types of meals prepared for the rich and wealthy people of those days. During the succeeding few centuries, the powerful and wealthy competed with each other to offer the most exotic banquets, and because of this the best cooks and their recipes were at a premium. Nevertheless, it was during the 19th century that cookery and recipe collections reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collating, trying out, and publishing the recipes of their peers. By the arrival of the 1900s, cook books were in great demand, mostly due to higher levels of literacy, more leisure time and having more money to spend. Like it or not, the introduction of television gave us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to access massive numbers of recipes like those on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
