The History of Recipes
Written recipes as an idea can be found far back into the far past, certainly as far back into history as the ancient Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, in the main part, these ancient cookbooks were just simple pictorial instructions for food preparation.
Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, we find a couple of recipe books dating from the fourteenth century : a book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these books have no connection with the indian food that is familiar to us all today, but rather accounts of the types of meals served to the rich and powerful of the time. Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of spices and herbs from Arab cooking, including coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new tastes created an outbreak in recipe manuscripts, most of which still exist in private cookery archives. The arrival of TV gave us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on our site. |
We hope you enjoy this Pear Lemon Ice recipe.
