The History of Recipes

Academics have tracked the existance of recipes back into the distant past, certainly as far as early Egypt, and maybe even further. In practice though, in the main part, these old cookbooks were just primitive pictorial recipes for preparing meals.

Interestingly, the oldest recipe in existence, according to academics are a few stone tablets in the Sumerian language describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel `wonderful`.

During Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a number of documents detailing recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his publication, Apicius describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into starters, main meal and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. He also informs us how the ancient chefs made use of many different aromatic flavours, including a few you will know like basil, fennel and parsley.

In the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back a variety of foods and herbs from Arab countries, including spices such as coriander, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new tastes led to an eruption in manuscripts on food, many of which still exist in private libraries.

Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us TV cooks and the demand for the accompanying recipe books.

And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes like those on our site.
